Belize Snorkel Holiday - 10 nts

1 nt stopover, 5 nts Ambergris Caye, 4 nts South Water Caye

This holiday starts with 5 nights on the popular island of Ambergris Caye staying at the Matachica Beach Resort. This hotel is located 5 miles north of San Pedro town where the reef comes closer to the shore. From the beach you can kayak to the reef, hook up to a buoy and snorkel the reef, the wonderful site of Mexico Rocks is a 5 minute boat ride and you will see a dazzling array of tropical fish that may include sergeant majors, blue tang, blue striped grunts and many other tropical reef fish. There may also be nurse sharks, stingrays, moray eels and turtles amongst the diverse soft and hard corals.

You will then transfer by short propeller flight and boat to the island of South Water Caye towards the middle of the Barrier Reef and stay 4 nights at an eco-resort called Pelican's Pouch. This island is much smaller and the resort occupies the south end, where you can swim from the beautiful beach, across the seagrass and explore the corals. There are many different corals including purple gorgonians, brain coral and staghorn coral, and swimming amongst them you might see queen angelfish, blue tang, octopus, squirrelfish, triggerfish and the majestic spotted eagle rays.

Day to Day

Below is an example day to day itinerary.

Day 1

Fly from London to US. Overnight in nearby airport hotel (Room only).

Day 2

Fly from US to Belize International Airport and then take a short propeller flight to the island of Ambergris Caye. Met on arrival and transferred by speedboat 5 miles north of San Pedro town to Matachica Beach Resort.

Day 3 to 6

Days at leisure at Matachica (Continental breakfast). You can kayak to the barrier reef and snorkel. *Optional excursions could include a 5 minute boat ride to the nearby Mexico Rocks where there is an abundance of tropical reef fish including squirrelfish, sergeant majors, bluestriped and french grunts amongst numerous others. There is also a good diversity of soft and hard corals at this site. Additionally we recommend you include a guided snorkel trip of Hol Chan Marine Reserve where you can get up close with nurse sharks, stingrays, shoals of snapper and jacks, moray eels and turtles. Boat trips run throughout the high season to the Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef where snorkellers accompany divers to the snorkel the rim of the hole and the two other spectacular sites at the atoll.

Day 7

A short propeller flight takes you back to the mainland and connects you to another short flight to the southern town of Dangriga on the mainland coast. You will then transfer by speedboat to the island of South Water Caye in the marine reserve. You will be staying in a cottage at the eco-resort of Pelican's Pouch which occupies the southern end of this idyllic palm fringed island, with its gently sloping sandy beach(BLD).

Day 8 to 10

Three further nights at Pelican's Pouch (BLD). South Water Caye is very close to the barrier reef and you can snorkel from the beach, across the seagrass and explore the numerous corals, shoals of blue tang, Spotted Eagle Rays and other marine life. *Optional excursions can include boat trips to nearby patch reefs and cayes, or a night snorkel.
